In an effort to give teachers more time for professional tasks, the Clovis Municipal Schools Board of Education voted to add eight early release days to the spring semester calendar at its Regular Meeting on Tuesday. Beginning in February, the early release days will provide classroom teachers an additional 20 hours to accomplish professional tasks. These early release days are intended to provide time for teacher planning and preparation. The goal is to return to teachers some of the time that has been, and will likely continue to be, lost as a result of managing COVID-related issues and added responsibilities.

Throughout the course of the pandemic, teachers have covered staff absences, substitute teacher shortages, and taken on added responsibilities to address needs caused by COVID. Compensating for the additional pressures of COVID has led to an erosion of behind-the-scenes time needed by teachers and has created a need that must be addressed.

The school board believes the weekly early releases would give staff an opportunity to plan and develop on a more frequent, consistent basis, which in turn will directly benefit our students as their teachers are fully equipped to meet their needs in the classroom. While the District understands the challenges this may pose, it is hoped that delaying the start until February will provide families and the community time to plan for childcare and other resulting needs. On early release days, elementary students are dismissed at 12:30 p.m., and middle and secondary students at 1 p.m.
